Surgery Day AGAIN!!!!.............

Well we woke to 6 inches of snow this morning, which was a wonderful distraction we really needed as Ben was a little tearful again.  So it was a quick rush around to collect all the bits & bobs we needed for the next 24 hours.  We wrapped up warm & headed out, the snow was fresh and had only a few footprints in so Jacob enjoyed making new ones!!!  As it was 6am the streets were quiet and there were not many people around, after we crossed the road we rushed into the building to get warm.   After a 5 minute walk we were at the 6th Floor Same Day Surgery.
We checked in and then we were taken to room 20 to get ready, Ben was surprisingly calm which made us all calm.  The routine was the same as before, Dr Dobbs came in at about 7am and drew on bens legs and said he hope to take him in at 7:30am.  This all seemed very quick, Ben again had his ‘loopy juice’ which I was glad he did, he was a lot more relaxed and calm and a little giggly...
At 7:30am on the dot they came to take him, he got a little tearful which made us all cry a little, and then he was gone.  We moved into our waiting area, Damo & Jakey went off to get breakfast as we were all starving.   Then the waiting began again...
At about 8:45am the first call came through all had gone well and Dr Dobbs was just finishing up!!! We knew it was going to be a lot quicker but that was fast, it was another 20 mins before Dr Dobbs rang and again said he was really happy with the surgery and Ben was heading to recovery.  I got a little excited as I was going to see my boy soon.  We didn’t have to wait long before we were called to see him. Siblings are not allowed in recovery so I went to see him first, he was half awake & managed a small smile the nurse said he was doing well and hope to be up on the 10th floor in the next 20 mins as they were just cleaning him room.  I then swopped with Damo, Jacob was getting a little irritated as he was desperate to see him but had to wait quite a while, well it turned into over an hour as there were a few problems – Not with Ben with beds and stuff, anyway at about 10:30am we were moved up the 10th floor, Ben managed to sleep the whole time in recovery and only woke as they moved him into the new bed in his room.  His new nurse Megan came in to do all his obs, straight away he asked when he can go home, she explained he needed to eat, drink, have a drip for extra fluids, wee and have his pain under control.  Damo took Jacob down to PT as the Wardleworth’s had offered to have him for a couple of hours while we were with Ben.
Within the first 10 minutes he drank 2 huge cups of juice, ordered food and was nearly back to his normal self.  While Megan was sorting him a got a brief look at his bandages, one on each inner thigh and one on his left calf.  He was being so brave I so in awe of him, he just so amazingly strong at times like this he puts alot of adults to shame – me included.

I choose apple flavoured gas please

Loopy juice kicks in!

Damo went off to get the car & some lunch for us, while he was gone the PT came in and told us a few useful tip on lifting Ben and about PT tomorrow, yes its back to it but a little gentler then before.  Ben ate all his food and was soon back on form laughing and joking with all the staff they loved his sense of humour.  Megan came back in to see how we were getting on Ben told her he had done all the things she asked ‘So when can I go!!’ he asked her.  She said he had done it all so took out his drip, again the tape hurt more than the tube, and she went off to speak to the doctor.  She came back and said the doctor was on his way.
About 20 minutes later he came in, he was really happy for Ben to go home; he was so excited he nearly burst!!  So a few forms filled in and the usual do’s & don’ts, Damo arrived back just in time we were off at 1pm.  Just AMAZING.
It was straight over to the Residence Inn to collect Jacob, Ben had hatched a plan to surprise them, Damo would knock on the door and we would hide around the corner and surprise them, well it worked Louise looked so shocked.
So we spent the next couple of hours chatting about what had happen as Annabelle is due to have hers on Tuesday.  Then Ben looked really tried and pale so we decided to leave not that either boy wanted too.
Back home it was the usual routine – Ben is nothing more than amazing we are so amazing proud of him words cannot explain.
Our brave little solider – Well love you so much xxx

A very lovely friend of ours wrote this poem for Ben today,

To enable him to walk so tall
Ben went to the US with his family all
They got on a plane for a very long flight
So he could try with all his might
To walk without his frame so blue
To have Dr. Park do a op or two
It was such a big thing for a 9 year old
And in a film his story was told.
How brave he was through his ordeals
But when well again ate mighty US meals.
One day Jake and Ben went to the zoo
And Mum and Dad and friends came too.
The doctors and nurses were all so good
And when Ben was in pain, did all they could
To make things easier for our brave little soldier
So when he comes home and is a little older
He can walk much taller without his walker
And the girls will think he is a bit of a corker!

Thank you Karen, we love it XXX
