Day 3 Post Op........

Well I last called Damian at 8pm to find that Ben was tucking into Chicken Nuggets & Chips for tea and was a lot perkier!!!

I managed to get a great night’s sleep – so pleased I could as I am no use to anyone when I have had little sleep.  As soon as I woke it was on the phone to Damian for an update.  Ben had had a good night’s sleep his IV had been disconnected and would be taking out if he drank 4 cups of juice during the day.  He was eating his breakfast of Frosties and juice.
Jake & I arrived about 9am, all seemed calm & well, Ben was on good form chatting, laughing and being his cheeky self.  His pain was ok as long as you didn’t need to move him quickly.  He was able to move himself rolling but still needed help with his knees.  Things were looking good he had Tylenol at 9am ready for his first PT session between 9 & 10am.  We were all feeling very positive about the physio as he had made such huge stride since yesterday.
A little after 10am well 10:02am to be accurate as Ben did tell Brandi his first PT that she was late, she briefly chatted to us about what we can and can’t do during his physio sessions and what is the best way to handle him and transfer him to his chair – I have to say this has was a lot harder than I thought – Ben had had his meds but seemed to be in a huge amount of pain and started to get upset as soon as he was moved, something he had been doing before without much problem.  As Brandi tried to explain what was going to happen.
So it was onto trying to get Ben to sit up then transfer to wheelchair, rolling over was fine, next bit was to scoop him up to sitting position, OMG the poor lad, the pain you could see was all over his face and the noises he made – He cried out in pain & said he wanted to be put back down.  Brandi talked him into sitting for 2 minutes, I had to help support his head s he a very little head control.  As soon as the time was up he was laid down his frustrations & anger took over – we both cried, but we soon got him comfortable and he was soon asleep.  Brandi told us she would be back at 1ish to take him to the PT room for more phsyio.  Right there I wondered how on earth we would ever get off the bad let alone into his wheelchair.  The morning passed quite quickly lunch arrived and a few Skype calls back home and it was time for Tylenol the Brandi arrived for the second session.  Ben was not having any of it he was beside himself – so I left the room for Damian to try to get him in the chair, to my amazement after 10 minutes he had managed it.  He was ok but his head was bothering him, his head control was very poor and to try and keep it in line with his spine while pushing him in a chair was hard.  Somehow we managed it & got him to the PT room on the 4th Floor.

The transfer to the therapy bed has a little bit easier, Brandi showed us some exercises that we need to do twice daily – Ben became rather pale & weepy but we managed to get through them – then the dreaded transfer back to the chair, which went really well.  Jacob, with the help of two special friends, went off to the gift shop and bought him a stunt truck set, he was made up!  So off back to the room we went.
I thought after all of that Ben would want to sleep when we got back – How wrong could I be, he was nearly back on form, laughing, joking and generally being cheeky.  Eating Ice cream and making Jacob & me laugh.  He seems a lot more happy now as only a few hours have gone by since the morning when he still was in a great deal of pain.
Ben had been told that if he drank 4 cups of juice his tube could come out of his hand, he was trying really hard to drink but was getting anxious that he was not drinking enough but by late afternoon it was taken out to Ben relief.  Tea time came and so did the dreaded you need to ‘poo’ conversation...
Ben was given something to help him go, it was a bumpy evening as he was fighting it, and I never thought I would be so happy for him to go to the toilet.
By 7:30pm he was shattered, Damian and Jacob had gone back to the apartment and lights were out as I tried to let him sleep, here’s hoping for a good night as we have to be up and ready for PT at 9am!!!!!!
